Introducing the highly-anticipated World Gin Day, the British Chamber of Commerce Philippines (BCCP) celebrated all things gin on June 27, 2024, at Dusit Thani Manila.

The event commenced with BCCP Chairman William Bailey and was hosted by BCCP vice chair Sarah McLeod and events committee head Chris Ward. In partnership with Ginebra San Miguel Inc., the event spotlighted the UK’s renowned gin brands including G&I Spirit Group Ltd., Skywave Gin, Spirit of Trent, and Roehill Springs Distillery.

The event also collaborated with companies, alongside major sponsor and beverage partners, with raffle sponsors.

1834 Gin brand manager Chey Mayuga of GSMI shared in her speech, “BCCP has been our steadfast partner in bringing this event to life. Their unwavering support and dedication has significantly contributed to the success of our celebrations and has strengthened the bond between the British and Filipino communities.”

“We celebrate World Gin Day, a global celebration of one of our most-beloved spirits. A day dedicated to appreciating the rich history, diversity, and innovative craftsmanship that makes gin a unique and cherished drink. From its origins in the 17th century to its modern-day resurgence, gin has always been more than just a beverage; it is a symbol of creativity, community, and camaraderie,” Mayuga said.

The event would not be complete without the 6th BCCP Bartending Competition, with contenders hailing from diverse backgrounds in bartending and mixology. This year’s roster included Sheila Sih, Gello Vargas, and Shawn San Juan — with San Juan eventually taking home the award for the best UK-Philippine-themed Gin incorporating GSMI’s 1834 Gin.

The BCCP aims to foster UK-Philippines trade and business opportunities to broaden markets for the two countries reciprocally. As gin has been embedded in the cultures and traditions of both countries, the celebration of this beloved spirit is just one of the many means to bolster trade, investment engagements, missions, and partnerships.
