AP Renewables Inc. (APRI), the geothermal arm of Aboitiz Power Corporation, and Aboitiz Renewables Inc. (ARI), signed an Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) contract with Shandong Electric Power Engineering Consulting Institute Co. Ltd. (SDEPCI) on November 7, 2024. This contract marks the beginning of the Bay Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) Project in Brgy. Bitin, Bay, Laguana, enhancing APRI’s energy portfolio with a cutting-edge storage solution.
The Bay BESS Project will integrate battery storage with APRI’s Makban geothermal plant, enabling rapid support to the Luzon Grid during peak demand and power outages. This innovative hybrid system is poised to significantly contribute to the country’s energy transition while adding value to local communities.
The project is a milestone as it represents the first BESS and geothermal hybrid system in the Philippines. SDEPCI, known for its expertise in engineering and power plant design across various countries, has committed to delivering a performance guarantee for this significant initiative.
The Bay BESS Project is expected to stimulate the regional economy by promoting industrial growth and creating job opportunities. Reliable power from this project will support local commerce and enhance the overall economic landscape in Laguna, which is vital for Luzon’s trade and industry sectors.
In addition to fostering economic activity, the Bay BESS Project aims to increase the tax base, thereby supporting public services and infrastructure development in the area. This investment aligns with APRI’s commitment to building long-term partnerships with host communities and enhancing their quality of life.
As APRI moves forward with this project, it remains dedicated to advancing sustainable energy solutions that benefit both the environment and local economies.
