Ajinomoto Philippines Corporation (APC Group) kicks off the new year with a significant commitment to sustainability, marking the first anniversary of its SariCycle® program. Launched in collaboration with the Quezon City Climate Change and Environmental Sustainability Department and Basic Environmental Systems and Technologies (BEST), SariCycle® has proven the power of community collaboration in reducing plastic waste and promoting environmental stewardship.

In its inaugural year, the SariCycle® program successfully collected 8.1 metric tons (8,100 kilograms) of single-use plastics—equivalent to over 16 million sachets—substantially decreasing plastic waste in Quezon City. This achievement was made possible by the dedication of 1,000 registered SariCyclers across 23 barangays, showcasing the impact of grassroots engagement in tackling environmental challenges.

During the anniversary celebration, APC Group honored the Top SariCyclers whose efforts were pivotal to the program’s success. These individuals embody the spirit of environmental responsibility, demonstrating that collective action can lead to meaningful change.

This milestone is a true testament to what we can accomplish as communities and organizations when we work hand in hand,” said Mr. Ernesto Carlos, APC’s Chief Sustainability Officer. “We are proud of what the SariCycle® program has achieved in just one year and are optimistic that it will inspire more sari-sari store owners and communities to join us in our journey toward a sustainable future by reducing plastic waste one community at a time.”

From One to Malawakan

APC’s sustainability efforts extend beyond SariCycle®. The company is committed to reducing its environmental impact by 50% by 2030, aligning with global initiatives to combat climate change.

Building on SariCycle®’s success in Quezon City, APC Group plans to expand the program to other municipalities in partnership with the Philippine Association of Stores and Carinderia Owners (PASCO). This expansion aims to empower even more communities to take action against plastic pollution while fostering long-term partnerships for environmental preservation.

A greener future with SariCycle®

The first anniversary celebration of SariCycle® not only highlighted past achievements but also set ambitious goals for the future. With continued support from partners, the program is poised to create positive change across communities in the Philippines, reinforcing that collective action can lead to a more sustainable future.

As APC Group embarks on another year with SariCycle®, it emphasizes that small steps taken together can create a ripple effect leading to monumental changes. The newly introduced campaign, “From One To Malawakan,” visually narrates the journey of SariCyclers as living proof that micro-efforts can yield macro-level impacts for society.
