A heaven-sent project for those who make our ends beautiful

Nearly 2,000 Filipinos die daily according to the Philippine Statistics Authority, pushing the funeral services industry toward the $1 billion annual mark within five years. This growing demand requires a steady stream of trained professionals, particularly embalmers.

Recently launched by the PCAS embalming school and TBWA\SMP, “Heaven Palette” aims to help embalmers-in-training by collecting donated pre-loved makeup. The initiative, promoted by celebrity makeup artist Jigs Mayuga, addresses a significant expense in embalming education while encouraging environmentally responsible repurposing of cosmetics.

“Hoarders like me no longer need to feel bad about letting go of old eye shadow, powder, or lipstick because we now have a meaningful purpose for it,” Mayuga noted in his social media post.

Embalming requires highly specialized training similar to medical professions. “Embalmers undergo training in Anatomy, Physiology, Chemistry, Microbiology, Hygiene and Sanitation, Instrumentation, Ethics, and Jurisprudence,” explains Sarah Dychangco-Reyes, President of the Pacific Center for Advanced Studies.

“Learning cosmetics is crucial because families want their departed loved ones to look at peace and resemble their photos,” shares Katrina Mercado, licensed embalmer and PCAS instructor. “High-quality makeup is expensive, but there’s a considerable difference in pigmentation and coverage compared to inferior products.”

The profession demands not just technical skills but also mental fortitude and empathy. “It’s a calling,” Mercado adds. “We are faced with mortality with every retrieval and embalming, and we grieve with you over your losses.”

Since its February launch, Heaven Palette has received a steady stream of donations through drop-offs and courier deliveries. The donations are evaluated, segregated, and arranged into actual Heaven Palettes for distribution to students.
