THE Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) has suspended the expansion of the number of motorcycles participating in the pilot run of the MC Taxi services in Metro Manila.
In a statement, LTFRB chairman Teofilo Guadiz, said the addition of more participants in the pilot run was deferred to give the Technical Working Group, which he chairs, time to finalize its recommendations on the issue, which will be submitted to Congress next month.
“The TWG will submit its recommendation to Congress this May regarding the results of our work,” Guadiz said, adding that it will comply with whatever decision Congress would issue on the matter.
He reiterated that the MC taxi service is the government’s response to the worsening traffic congestion in the National Capital Region.
It is likewise seen as the solution to the problem of unauthorized motorcycle taxis transporting passengers without a permit from the LTFRB.
Guadiz said that aside from insurance provided to passengers, the MC Taxi service will hire trained drivers to ensure the safety of the riding public.
There are currently an estimated 51,000 MC Taxi slots in Metro Manila.
Previously, the Public Transport Coalition held a media forum in Quezon City to call on the LTFRB and President Ferdinand Marcos Jr to stop the planned expansion of the pilot run in the metropolis.
