THE National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) has highlighted the role of public-private partnership (PPP) projects in strengthening disaster resilience in the Philippines.
This the agency stressed as its Board revealed there are 169 projects in the pipeline worth P3.18 trillion.
Of the projects, the P4.53 billion New Bohol International Airport and the P1.2 billion Negros Occidental Bulk Water Supply Project are likely to be awarded by the end of the year.
The Bohol airport project involves upgrade, expansion, operations, and maintenance of the facility, over a period of 35 years from the start of the turnover of their operations and maintenance.
The Negros Occidental water project meanwhile involves the finance, design, construction, and operation and maintenance of a bulk water supply facilities sourced from Imbang River and Malogo River Basin.
“Limited fiscal space, especially in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic, necessitates developing our governance framework for public-private partnerships to finance climate-resilient infrastructure,” Arsenio Balisacan, NEDA secretary said.
Balisacan said that while most of the country’s PPP projects are in the physical and digital connectivity sectors, “major water supply, flood control, and irrigation infrastructure projects are also in the pipeline to meet the economy’s growing needs while ensuring climate-change resiliency.”
