DA recommends tariff hike on imported rice

The Department of Agriculture is recommending an increase in tariff on imported rice and temporarily halt all importation to protect local farmers, Communications Secretary Dave Gomez said on Monday.

Gomez said the Cabinet will still “discuss this urgent matter with the president in India on the sidelines of his state visit.”

Asked how much the recommended tariff rate is, Gomez said “details will still be discussed and agreed upon.”In a message to Malaya Business Insight, Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. also confirmed that the agency is recommending an increase in tariffs on imported rice.

The secretary said they are also considering a temporary stop on rice imports to protect local farmers.
