Much- needed additional power plant capacity for summer will be available after the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) granted Victoria’s Milling Co. Inc. (VMC) a provisional authority to operate its 40 megawatts (MW) biomass co-generation power plant in Negros Occidental.

In a disclosure to the Philippine Stock Exchange, VMC said it received on Monday a letter advice from the ERC dated March 10, 2022.

VMC added the power plant has a feed-in-tariff eligible capacity of 21.450 MW and its 2×2 MW black start diesel engine generating units for a period of one year from March 10, 2022 to March 9, 2023.

VMC said the P2 billion co-generation biomass power plant will run mainly on bagasse, a byproduct of sugar canes after being processed to extract sugar.

The ERC has identified VMC’s 40 MW biomass power plant as one of the 72.7 MW power plants utilizing the same technology that may run and become operational in time for summer.

At least 22 energy projects with a total capacity of 199.45 MW can possibly provide more supply during the summer months. – Jed Macapagal
