UP TO 10% HIGHER THIS UNDAS: Airports gear up for surge in passenger volume

THE Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) yesterday said passenger traffic is anticipated to increase by 7 to 10 percent during this year’s Undas.

CAAP said it has heightened security across all its 44 operated airports nationwide from October 25 to November 10.

In 2023, CAAP recorded 2.1 million passengers traveling from October to November, up from 1.9 million during the same period in 2022.

CAAP has mandated all service chiefs and airport managers to ensure continuous operations around the clock, enhancing support for travelers.

Passengers are encouraged to prepare for their travels in advance and coordinate closely with their airlines before heading to the airport. Arriving at least three hours before their flight will help ensure a smooth and efficient travel experience during the upcoming holiday rush.

Meanwhile, New NAIA Infra Corp. (NNIC), which took over the operation of Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) last September, said it is aligning its efforts with the Manila International Airport Authority’s (MIAA) “Oplan Biyaheng Ayos: Undas 2024” initiative to ensure a smooth and efficient travel season.

This approach will focus on enhancing security protocols, passenger assistance and traffic management.

NNIC said in a statement it is enhancing coordination MIAA as its regulator, Department of Transportation, Philippine National Police-Aviation Security Group, Metropolitan Manila Development Authority, Bureau of Customs, Bureau of Immigration and the Bureau of Quarantine to ensure sufficient manpower and resources are available to handle the expected increased passenger traffic.

NNIC said it is also working with airline companies to encourage early check-in counter openings to allow passengers more time for check-in and reduce queuing times during peak hours.

A comprehensive review of ground handler and airline equipment deployment is ongoing to make sure sufficient serviceable equipment is available to manage baggage and passenger flow efficiently, it added.

NNIC is in talks with transportation service providers to increase vehicle availability and make it easier for passengers to access, and depart from, the airport.

Additional parking spaces at Terminal 3 will also be opened to accommodate more vehicles and help ease traffic congestion around the airport, the company said.
