THE Land Transportation Office (LTO) has generated almost P1 billion in revenues from fines and penalties paid by those apprehended for various traffic violations across the country in the first half of the year.

The agency has collected P986.5 million in revenue from penalties imposed on a total of 330,073 motorists apprehended nationwide from January 1 to June 30 for various offenses.

“Not all of those apprehended already settled the fines and penalties but based on the LTO data, a total of P986.5 million were already collected from January 1 to June 30 this year,” the agency said

Vigor Mendoza II, LTO chief and transportation assistant secretary, expressed optimism the agency could achieve its P33-billion target revenue collection this year.

Mendoza said the revenue target is achievable since the LTO has recorded P17.9 billion from January 1 to May 30, higher by 34 percent from the same period in 2023.

Aside from fines and penalties, other revenue sources of the LTO include motor vehicle user charges and driver’s license transactions.

Mendoza also assured the public of full transparency in the collection and remittance to the national treasury, saying that good governance is the core concept of Bagong Pilipinas’ brand of service under President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.

Meanwhile, LTO urged motorists to settle fines on time to avert paying penalties.

“We are asking them (motorists) to settle on time because failure to do so would only result in the payment of higher fines and penalties. As much as possible, we in the LTO do not want motorists to pay any fine or penalty. But in the interest of the rule of law and road safety, we have to do this if this is what it takes to compel them to be disciplined and behave while on the road,” Mendoza said.
