Tollways flood control ramped up

The MVP Group’s tollways operator, NLEX Corporation, is joining hands with local government units (LGUs) in efforts to mitigate flooding in the expressways that traverse Quezon City to Bulacan and Pampanga.

NLEX is working together with the Department of Transportation (DOTr), Toll Regulatory Board (TRB), Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), LGU of Valenzuela and Meycauayan, and the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA).

In a statement, NLEX said a joint cleanup and clearing operation of identified blocked waterways commenced last August 4 and was now in full swing.

This collaborative effort aims to mitigate flooding by focusing on the clogged waterways that contributed to the recent flooding incidents, NLEX stated.

DOTr Secretary Vince Dizon led the inspection of one of the critical areas in Valenzuela. “This is an all-out effort by all stakeholders, NLEX, the City of Valenzuela, DOTr, DPWH, everyone is working together because this can’t be done unless it’s a coordinated effort. We don’t know when it will rain heavily again, so we have to take advantage of the relatively good weather to clear this up, because it would be difficult if the flooding happens again,” Dizon said.

NLEX has deployed around 120 personnel to work daily, bringing along heavy equipment such as an amphibious backhoe, a backhoe on a barge, boom trucks, dump trucks, and a genset, across all assigned locations to accelerate progress and improve water flow ahead of inclement weather.

NLEX also ramped up its multi-layered flood control defense to enhance protection against flooding along its expressway network. The tollway company is pursuing long-term solutions, working closely with government partners, that will benefit both motorists and the surrounding communities.

Earlier over the weekend, industrialist-philanthrophist Ramon S. Ang of San Miguel Corporation volunteered to undertake a flood control project in certain parts of Metro Manila at no cost to the LGUs or the national government.
