THE Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) on Wednesday said transport network companies (TNC) and public utility vehicles (PUV) which hire drivers with non-professional licenses could lead to the suspension of their franchise.

Recently, motorcycle taxi riders were removed by Angkas for failing to meet its onboarding commitments, particularly professional licensing.

“If a TNC or PUV company allows a non-pro driver to use these cars in ferrying passengers, that’s ground for a possible suspension or revocation of their franchise. It’s prohibited because it’s a safety issue. We’re investigating that. We are taking the accounts of who were offboarded. If we can just get one to execute a written statement, that is sufficient enough to suspend the TNC,” Teofilo Guadiz, LTFRB chairman, said in a text message.

LTFRB’s pilot program for motorcycle taxis mandates professional driver’s licenses for riders to ensure safety and compliance with public transport standards.

Beyond seeking reinstatement, the dismissed riders urged the LTFRB to hold motorcycle taxi companies accountable for properly educating drivers during onboarding.

They argued that compliance should not rest solely on riders, especially when companies fail to communicate the rules.
