Artificial Intelligence (AI) is at the forefront of transformative change across the globe placing the Philippine outsourcing companies at the center of this phenomenon.

Nalakumar RS, vice president of TELUS International Digital Solutions, cited the Philippine AI Roadmap which said AI technologies can unlock $92 billion in the Philippine GDP and $1 trillion in that of Southeast Asia’s.

“AI is transforming industries worldwide and it is essential to ensure that this transformation benefits everyone. AI should be used to augment human capabilities, not replace them, and it should be designed with privacy and security in mind,” Nalakumar RS said.

In the Philippines, he said, it is even more critical to uphold responsible AI principles due to the growing importance of the outsourcing and digital solutions industry.

AI benefits Filipino workers as it creates new job opportunities and presents upskilling opportunities for existing employees, he said

“Part of the National AI Strategy is attracting the world’s leading firms to invest in the country, set up shops, and generate more jobs for Filipinos,” Nalakumar RS pointed out.

“By providing training and development programs, we can equip our workforce with the skills needed to thrive in the digital age.”

This not only benefits Telus employees but also contributes to the overall growth of the outsourcing and digital solutions industry in the Philippines, he adds.

Nalakumar RS said at Telus, “we embed privacy and confidentiality measures into every aspect of our organization.”

When annotating images with people’s faces, Telus uses anonymization techniques. These practices ensure that AI community members and clients trust Telus with their data, which is vital in the era of data-driven decision-making.

“In addition to anonymization techniques, we have implemented a comprehensive data security framework that includes encryption, access controls, and regular audits to ensure compliance with industry standards and regulations,” Nalakumar RS said

“We provide ongoing training and awareness programs to our AI contributors to ensure they understand the importance of data security and privacy,” he added.

Telus is also certified under the highest standard for information security management systems. “This commits us to safeguarding sensitive information and protecting the privacy of our clients and their customers,” Nalakumar RS said.

“We comply with other relevant data protection regulations as well. We work closely with our clients to offer diverse workforce solutions to mitigate AI bias.”

Telus uses built-in tools to anonymize personal identifiable information from data to comply with data governance regulations and implement the highest security standards to ensure data security, Nalakamura RS said.

“Practicing data security, privacy, and confidentiality creates a trusted environment for our clients and their customers. This not only protects their sensitive information but also contributes to the overall growth and reputation of the AI industry.”

“TELUS International believes that diversity and inclusion are non-negotiable principles.

We minimize bias in AI algorithms and create opportunities for those who might otherwise face barriers to employment.”

Telus recognizes the importance of cross-functional collaboration in addressing blind spots in AI systems, Nalakumar RS said. “This means being mindful that the data used to train AI is free of bias at every stage of the development process.”

Telus monitors and tests its AI models to identify and address any potential biases, providing clear explanations of how its algorithms work and the data used to train employees.

Telus has established Employee Resource Groups that promote diversity and inclusion within its workforce. These groups provide a platform for employees to share their experiences and perspectives, and help refresh company policies and practices. – Paul Icamina
