Local telecom operators have strengthened their collaboration with government agencies in ramping up initiatives that would address text scams and the proliferation of illegal streaming devices.

PLDT Inc.’s wireless arm Smart Communications Inc. has partnered with the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) to further strengthen the fight against scammers with the integration of DICT’s eGov PH app into the subscriber identity module (SIM) registration process.

Under the partnership, DICT’s eGOV’s extensive database covering Filipinos nationwide will be integrated into Smart’s SIM registration platform to curb fraudulent activities.

“Our collaboration with the DICT for eGOV is part of the PLDT Group’s support for the government’s overall digitalization thrust, with the aim of making government services accessible to more Filipinos across the country,” Jojo Gendrano, PLDT and Smart head of the enterprise business group, said in a statement.

eGOV is a one-stop online system for various government services, covering local and national public agencies.

Meanwhile, Globe Telecon Inc. lauded the recent initiative of the Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPHL) to address the proliferation of illegal streaming devices in the market.

Rowel Barba, IPOPHL director general, recently said the agency is working with the National Telecommunications Commission to help enforce a local crackdown on illegal streaming devices, also called black boxes, in the absence of a law governing this crime.
