GLOBE Telecom Inc. yesterday warned mobile subscribers against fraudsters spreading fake subscriber identity module (SIM) registration links on social media, which lead to malicious sites aimed at duping customers into sharing sensitive information.
These fake SIM registration links lead to blogs filled with online ads.
“We appeal to our customers to please use only our official platforms to register new SIMs. The only way to register your new SIMs is through our SIM registration site or the GlobeOne app. Any other site pretending to be a registration portal is fraudulent and dangerous. Please be vigilant,” said Darius Delgado, Globe vice president and head of consumer mobile business.
The Department of Information and Communications Technology also warned the public against fake SIM registration sites, saying these are geared towards getting sensitive information from SIM users.
Globe earlier completed major improvements to its SIM registration channels as it hopes to protect customer data and deter fraud.
These include advanced encryption protocols to secure data transmission during registration, live photo capture, and the use of Optical Character Recognition technology for document verification, Globe said.
The SIM Registration Act mandates the registration of all SIMs to protect consumers from illegal activities such as scams, smishing, and other forms of mobile phone and online fraud.
As of the end of 2023, Globe’s registered mobile subscribers reached 57 million compared to 87.9 million subscribers in the previous year or prior to the implementation of the mandatory SIM registration.
