Sugar shortage could hurt carinderias

Small retailers and carinderias appealed for an immediate solution to the shortage in sugar, saying the thinning supply of soft drinks would put them out of business.

In a statement, the Philippine Association of Stores and Carinderia Owners Inc. (PASCO) said they have been informed by wholesalers it could take three months or longer for them to deliver enough supply of soft drinks and other beverages.

This after the group noted the volume of deliveries has been very limited since last week, particularly for one brand of soft drinks which it did not identify.

The group said this poses another threat to the livelihood among its members which have only started recovering after more than two years of hard lockdown and strict mobility.

Soft drinks and other beverages account for a big part of sales of sarisari stores and carinderias.

PASCO said 57.6 percent of its members closed their businesses at the height of the pandemic in 2020 and 32.8 percent have remained closed until 2021.

“We are appealing to authorities to address the shortage on sugar as soon as possible,” PASCO said.
