SN Aboitiz Power Group (SNAP) broke ground on Monday its first battery energy storage sys-tem (BESS) facility in the Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR).

The company said in a statement on Tuesday that the 40 megawatts (MW) Binga BESS facil-ity will be co-located at the 140 MW Binga hydroelectric power plant in Itogon, Benguet.

SNAP said the BESS project  builds on the 24 MW Magat BESS and the ongoing devel-opment of the 16 MW Magat BESS Phase 2, which together will bring the company’s total battery storage capacity to 80 MW by 2026.

The company said the Binga BESS is its first battery storage project in Benguet and the third in its fleet.

Last February, SNAP sealed  engineering, procurement, and construction deals with GEDI China Energy, a subsidiary of China Energy Engineering Group,  for the devel-opment of the 40 MW Binga BESS that will be funded by the Bank of the Philippine Is-lands and BDO Uni-bank Inc.

However, the company declined to disclose the amount provided by the two banks.
