RAMON Ang, president and chief operating officer of San Miguel Corp. (SMC), urged power facilities to scale down production to save on fuel and further secure supply for the next coming months.
Ang assured of sufficient power to supply the requirements of the country for the duration of the enhanced community quarantine but said it would be prudent for power facilities to save as much fuel to ensure continuous operation and be prepared in case the situation worsens.
“If there is excess capacity today, particularly since major business and commercial centers and industries are practically shut down, then perhaps government can require power plants to only produce what is needed in order to save on fuel,” he said in a statement..
SMC’s power generation arm, SMC Global Power has a total capacity of over 3,600 megawatts (MW) coming from power plants including 1,200 MW Ilijan power plant; 2×500 MW Sual coal power plant; 4×35 MW Limay cogeneration power plant; 345 MW San Roque hydro plant and the 218 MW Angat hydropower plant.
