SMC completes part of BESS pipeline

SMC Global Power Holdings Corp. has completed a portion of its pipeline of 31 battery energy storage systems (BESS) in the country.

In a statement, international technology group, Wärtsilä, through its local subsidiary, Universal Power Solutions Inc., said it completed its first two projects with SMC Global Power last month.

The company said final commissioning was achieved last month for the 20 megawatts (MW)/20 megawatt hours (MWh) Integrated Renewable Power Hub-Toledo project in Cebu and the 40 MW/40 MWh BCCPP Battery Storage Project in Bataan.

Wartsila said the projects are the first energy storage systems supplied to the Philippines and delivered on an engineering, procurement and construction contract.

In a separate statement, another global tech firm, ABB, said its partnership with SMC Global Power for its battery energy storage facilities will start to be installed this month.

The company said that two 20 MW sites will be installed within the month and as another 40 MW site is set to be completed by July.

ABB said that there are other remaining sites will be completed in 2022 with SMC Global Power but declined to disclose their locations. – Jed Macapagal
