Shipments of personal computers (PC) in the Philippines have increased by 25 percent in 2021 as compared in the previous year, but penetration rate still lowest in region according to latest report of research firm International Data Corp. (IDC).
In virtual press briefings, Maciek Gornicki IDC senior research manager in Asia/Pacific reported that the Philippines PC shipment stood 2.85 million units last year from 2.28 million units in the previous year. Bulk of the growth was driven by consumer segments due to work from home and online educations
“Work from home, online learning, entertainment drive strong consumer sales” according to Gornicki.
PC shipments in the country is projected to decline in the next four years, with 2.69 million units, 2.34 million units, 2.37 million units and 2.44 million for 2022, 2023, 2024 and 2025 respectively.
“The significant demand seen during the recent pandemic waves is not sustainable in the long term many have already purchased their devices for WFH and online learning” IDC said.
However, Philippine has one of the lowest PC penetration rates in the region with 6 percent market share, opening further opportunities for PC adoption and market growth.
The IDC added that PC demand is expected to remain robust this year as uncertainty about future pandemic outbreaks means businesses, schools and consumers will want to be ready for another lockdown. Another factor that could drive growth is the digitization of business, growth in e-commerce will drive more spending from private sector.
In terms of PC brand, Acer continues to lead the market with 27 percent market share, followed by Dell with 17 percent market share, Lenovo has 15 percent and Asus and HP both have 11 percent market share.
“The PC has become a necessity during the pandemic. While the demand was strong beyond our expectations, due to online learning and work-from-home needs, including notebook PCs, Chromebooks, monitors and others, we did our best to fulfill them,” said Sue Ong-Lim, Acer Philippines general manager.
Acer has led the notebook category in the Philippines for 16 consecutive years, with a record-high 33 percent market share in 2021. It had a 30 percent market share in consumer notebooks and a 34 percent market share in gaming notebooks.
In the consumer branded desktop category, Acer had a 31 percent market share in 2021 as it dominated the consumer all-in-one desktop category with a 52 percent market share. In the monitors category, it had a 22% market share for 2021.
In terms of PCs shipped by the end of 2021, Acer Philippines sold 561,000 units last year from 394,000 in 2020 and 347,000 in 2019. This strong performance was driven by online learning as Filipinos turned to Acer, the tech giant known for its strong position in the education sector. Other factors that drove growth were the increased need for devices as more Filipinos worked from home and Acer’s multiple product offerings across all market segments and the brand’s value for money proposition.
“Acer’s goal in 2022 is to optimally perform within core business competencies while we transform to prepare for areas of future growth,” said Ong-Lim.
