Sales of members of the Association of Vehicle Importers and Distributors Inc. (AVID) rose 59 percent in the first five months of 2021 to 25,217 units from 15,811 units sold in the same period in 2020.
May sales jumped by 293 percent to 4,864 units from 1,239 units sold in the same month in 2020 and by 8 percent from 4,496 units in April.
The commercial vehicles segment remains the growth driver with a 625-percent surge in sales in the five-month period. The segment was led by Hyundai.
The passenger cars segment recorded a 29-percent increase in sales as of May from 4,928 to 6,357 units sold.
May 2021 sales almost quadrupled from 354 units sold in May 2020 to 1,029 units.
AVID attributed this to the gradual re-opening of the economy and less restrictive quarantine measures. Suzuki remains the top selling PC brand.
In the light commercial segment, AVID reported a 68 percent gain as of May from last year’s 10,782 units to 18,128 units. Ford dominated the segment.
