The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) is on track to complete by the second quarter the remaining two phases of the road widening project of Lawton avenue in Taguig.

“We are keen on expediting the completion of the remaining two phases of the project with Phase 2 covering 1,100 lineal meters from Bayani road to Philippine Navy and Phase 3 covering 240 lineal meters from Philippine Navy to Pasong Tamo extension,” said Roger Mercado, DPWH secretary, who led the project inspection last week.

The 1.34-kilometer Phase 1 from 5th avenue to Bayani road was completed and opened to the public last November.

Once fully completed, the 3.1-kilometer, four-lane Lawton avenue will be converted into a six-lane thoroughfare that will help decongest traffic in EDSA, South Superhighway and C-5 road.

It will also complement the 961.427-lineal meter Bonifacio Global City-Ortigas Center Link road which has improved access to and from the cities of Taguig, Pasig, Makati and Mandaluyong.

The widening of the Lawton avenue is part of the EDSA Decongestion Program, one of the flagship projects under the Build, Build, Build program.

The DPWH also targets to complete the P3.4-billion Binondo-Intramuros project in the first half of the year. The 680-linear meter bridge connects Intramuros at Solana street and Riverside drive with Binondo at Rentas/Plaza del Conde streets and Muelle dela Industria.

The bridge project is financed by a grant aid from the People’s Republic of China. It is expected not only to cut travel time between the two busy districts of Intramuros and Binondo in Manila but also benefit approximately 30,000 vehicles daily.
