Local power plant developer, Quezon Power Philippines Ltd. Co. (QPL), is eyeing to build a 1,200 megawatts (MW) natural gas-fired power plant in Mauban, Quezon.

Based on a document it submitted to the Department of Environment and Natural Resources’ (DENR) Environmental Management Bureau, the project will cost P71 billion.

The filing also mentioned the project will approximately utilize 30 hectares of land area as it will involve the construction of on-shore regasification and storage facilities, power plant, liquefied natural gas (LNG) jetty, LNG unloading system and other support facilities.

According to QPL’s submission, construction is eyed to begin this year while the commercial operations is set by 2028.

The company said the project, which will be called as the San Francisco LNG combined cycle gas turbine, will be built in the north of its existing coal-fired power plant, the 460 MW Quezon power plant.

The proposed natural gas-fired power facility aims to provide stable power supply in Luzon through a reliable and affordable caseload power supply, QPL added.

The proposed site was selected because it is adjacent to existing power plants and accessible by road and sea, since transportation of LNG is deemed more convenient if deliveries are focused only in one area, the developer also explained in the DENR submission.

QPL said the site was chosen due to the availability of seawater in close proximity, which is a primary requirement in the operation of the power plant; sufficiency of available land to allow for future expansion; and the proximity to power substations and transmission lines. – Jed Macapagal
