Pilipinas Shell Petroleum Corp. (PSPC) has completed the transformation of its refining facility into a world-class import terminal in Tabangao, Batangas.

PSPC said the depot will enhance its capacity and will enable it to continue meeting fuel demand in Metro Manila as well as in Southern Luzon and Northern Visayas.

“From tough decisions come positive results. The transformation of our refinery into a world-class import facility demonstrates Shell’s commitment to provide sustainable energy to the Philippines despite the challenging conditions posed by the pandemic. We are now better positioned, operationally and financially to serve the country’s energy needs as the economy reopens with the lifting of restrictions,” said Cesar Romero, PSPC president and chief executive officer, at the inauguration of the Shell Import Facility in Tabangao (SHIFT).

Romero said the closure of the refinery starting last year helped the company have a “more balanced and competitive marketing portfolio, supported by the organization’s robust supply chain.”

In the first quarter, PSPC registered a P1 billion net income, a turnaround from the P5.5-billion loss in the same period in 2020.

Kit Bermudez, incoming vice president for trading and supply of PSPC, said the state-of-the-art facilities of the Tabangao terminal will help PSPC build a more resilient supply chain with a robust logistics setup to meet future growth requirements of the market.

SHIFT has a storage capacity of up to 263 million liters and is equipped with jetties that have loading arms to make product transfer safer and faster.

Bermudez said the facility allows for an easier and more ergonomic operations that also permit emergency release action without any spillage of products.

The jetties are designed to receive products from various vessel sizes including medium-range import vessels that can carry around 30 million to 50 million liters of petroleum products.

The loading gantries are also equipped with bottom loading function, which enables PSPC to load a 30 kiloliter truck in 20 minutes.
