PRIME Infrastructure Capital Inc. said it is open to venturing into floating solar technology especially since the Razon Group has assets utilizing water bodies.

“We’re considering floating solar. It’s a very good type of solar system. It all comes down to economics and grid access and so on and so forth but we’re absolutely open to floating solar and we support it very much,” Guillaume Lucci, Prime Infra president and chief executive officer, told reporters at the sidelines of the company’s inauguration of a 64- megawatt (MW) solar power plant in Tanauan, Batangas last Friday.

The Razon Group’s assets that utilize water bodies include hydro power projects and bulk water supply facilities.

Prime Infra, through its wholly owned subsidiary Prime Solar Solutions Corp., said the Tanauan Solar project which broke ground in April 2023, employed an advanced execution technology, digital twin technology, drone verification of progress, optimized string sizing and 24/7 quality assurance and quality control monitoring both at factory and at site.

The facility has a 50 MW power supply agreement with the Manila Electric Co. for 20 years.

The rest of the plant’s output will be sold to the national grid.

“We have a long-term contract (with Meralco) to fulfill, and we look forward to doing just that and hopefully connect this plant, as quickly as possible, so as to distribute energy and release pressure on the grid,” Lucci said.

Lucci said Prime Infra is working on the expansion of the existing Tanauan Solar for another 10 to 12 MW scheduled for completion within the year.

“We are certainly evaluating the possibility of building more solar plants. We are focused on renewable energy and solar is of course a big part of that,” Lucci said.

At present, Prime Solar has two solar power plants, the one in Tanauan, Batangas and another 64 MW in Maragondon, Cavite that will jointly supply up to 128 MW of power capable for about 84,000 households and displacing over 100,000 tons of coal per year.

Lucci said another 10 to 12 MW expansion is being eyed for the Cavite solar project.

Prime Infra is the Razon Group’s business arm that focuses on building assets that support energy, access to clean water and waste management.
