The Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) chalked up a robust revenue performance in the first half of 2025, raising P14.67 billion, up 14 percent from P12.91 billion a year earlier.

The increase underscores the result of PPA’s capacity expansion and the resilience of the shipping industry amid global headwinds, reflecting rising demand for sea travel, cargo movement, and port services.

PPA marked its 51st anniversary this July, with strong operational gains across the board. Cargo throughput reached 149 million metric tons, up 7.5 percent from 138.5 million metric tons last year, driven by a recovery in domestic and international trade.

Container traffic surged 11 percent to 4.16 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs), signaling renewed manufacturing activity and heightened logistics demand.

Passenger volumes rose to 46 million, a 10 percent jump from last year, while cruise travel nearly doubled to 143,149 passengers—a 91 percent spike—as luxury vessels returned to Philippine ports.

Roll-on/roll-off (RoRo) vehicle traffic also saw a 9.4 percent rise, totaling 6.39 million units from 5.85 million in the same period last year, indicating improved inter-island mobility. Ship calls increased by 9 percent to over 340,000, underscoring the growing pressure on port infrastructure.

To address the expanding demand, PPA is implementing 90 locally funded projects nationwide, with 38 in Luzon, 30 in Visayas, and 22 in Mindanao.

Major developments completed in Luzon include upgrades to Capinpin Port in Bataan, Romblon Port, and Mauban Port in Quezon, as well as enhancements at ports in Ilocos Sur and Ilocos Norte.

In the Visayas, capacity improvements have been finalized at the ports of Tagbilaran, Bacolod, and Iloilo. Meanwhile, Mindanao saw the completion of expansion works at Balingoan Port in Misamis Oriental, with key upgrades nearing completion in Cagayan de Oro, Camiguin, and Davao del Sur.
