PPA to complete 90 ports this year

The Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) targets to complete before the yearend 90 more port projects, including an international cruise ship terminal in Siargao and another one in Coron, Palawan, its general manager Jay Santiago said.

Santiago told reporters at the Kapihan san Pantalan yesterday the agency completed 30 seaport projects in the first year of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s Build, Better More initiative.

Santiago said the construction of the country’s first cruise terminal located in Barangay Jubang in Dapa, Siargao is ongoing and will be completed by October.

He said the P560- million port will have a dedicated international cruise terminal as we;; as also a domestic cargo terminal as the existing one is no longer feasible for large vessels.

Santiago added the port in Coron, Palawan which costs over P500 million will also have a cruise terminal and will be opened this year.

Santiago sees the number of sea passengers in the country to increase by 50 percent this year from 52 million last year.

To continuously address the needs of stakeholders, PPA has also launched its Port Users and Locators Satisfaction Outlook \which is set to be rolled out in its 25 Port Management Offices this month.

In line with the week-long celebration of the PPA’s 49th anniversary, activities will focus on projects that reflect its goal of providing world-class port services and facilities.

Meanwhile, the Philippine Fisheries Development Authority (PFDA) and the provincial government of Cebu plan to construct a regional fish port (RFP) in the province.

In a statement, PFDA said the project is expected to help more fisherfolk in the region by boosting the production of commercial fisheries, municipal fisheries and aquaculture.

PFDA said the port will require eight hectares. Existing RFPs include Bulan in Sorsogon; Sual in Pangasinan; General Santos; Davao; Zamboanga; Lucena in Quezon Province; Iloilo; and Navotas.
