SEAPORT passenger traffic in the country reached at least 1.88 million during the Holy Week, surpassing the earlier projected count of 1.73 million, data released by the Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) on April 20 showed.
From April 12 to April 19, PPA already recorded a 12.6 percent increase in passenger volume, compared with last year’s 1.67 million.
During the period, the highest number of passengers was recorded on April 16, with a total of 333,330 travelers, the PPA said.
Last week, Jay Santiago, PPA general manager, said he anticipated a substantial increase in passenger volume this year, compared with the same period last year, as more Filipinos were seen taking advantage of sea travel to visit their provinces, pilgrimage sites and vacation destinations.
The top five ports for this Lenten season were the Port of Batangas, which was expected to handle around 20,000 to 25,000 daily passengers, followed by the Port of Mindoro, Port of PMO Panay/Guimaras, Port of Negros Oriental/ Siquijor, and Port of Bohol.
