The Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) has awarded the contract for the improvement of five ports with a combined cost of P1.95 billion.

Data from PPA dated Jan. 6, 2025 showed the P453-million dredging project of Pier 18 was awarded to Premium Megastructures Inc. and the P926.3-million dredging of Pasig River (Mouth to El Codo and Malacañang Pontoon wharf, in South Harbor Manila) to Khan Kon Chi Construction and Development Corp.

The data showed other contracts awarded are the P71.7-million dredging project for the Ports of Lamao and Capinpin, Bataan; P150.8-million dredging of San Jose Port, Occidental Mindoro; and the P350-million San Carlos port improvement project.

PPA is set to bid out this quarter the contracts for the expansion and improvement of 15 ports valued at P5.85 billion that include the construction of a new cruise ship terminal in Puerto Galera, Oriental Mindoro.

PPA has been accelerating the expansion and modernization of various ports across the country to accommodate the expected increase in cargo and passenger traffic.

PPA said it projects sea passenger volume to reach 85 million in 2025, driven by government initiatives promoting domestic travel and improvements in passenger facilities at the ports that will continue to bolster the upward trend in passenger footprint.

PPA earlier said it earmarked P16 billion for the expansion and modernization of major ports until the end of the Marcos administration, or about P3.5 billion to P4 billion budget yearly.

As of the end of September 2024, PPA posted total revenues of P20.06 billion, up by 6.7 percent from the same period in 2023. The growth was driven by higher service and business income as well as income from other sources and regulatory fees.

PPA data showed the country’s cargo volume increased by 7.3 percent in the first nine months of 2024 to 218.28 million metric tons (mt) from 203.5 million mt in the same period in 2023, driven by 8 percent and 5.8 percent growth in foreign and domestic cargoes, respectively.

Container traffic volume grew by 3.5 percent to 5.7 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) from January to September last year, from 5.53 million TEUs in the comparable period in 2023.
