PLDT Inc. iis on track to scale up its international submarine cable capacity to support the hyperscale requirements of global tech giants.
Gene Sanchez, PLDT vice president and international facilities investments management head, said the company is looking at all the building blocks necessary to make the Philippines the favored hyperscaler hub in Asia.
“The Philippines is already part of the big chain, but we need to make us more favorable.
We have embarked on implementing an international submarine network — a plan that would support hyperscaler requirements. That means we will be able to scale up submarine capacity at will,” Sanchez said in a statement.
PLDT said its current international cable network comprises 15 global subsea cable systems, which will further be expanded with its investment in additional subsea cables such as Asia Direct Cable, Jupiter and Apricot that are expected to be operational by the end of this year to 2022.
PLDT Group also announced during the roundtable discussion at the recent Philippine Digital Convention 2021 that it is set to build the first hyperscaler data center in the country designed to serve the hyperscale requirements of global tech giants. – Myla Iglesias
