President Marcos Jr. expressed hope the Philippines and the Emirates Nuclear Energy Corp. (ENEC) would become partners to explore the possible use of nuclear energy for power generation in the country.
The President, during the courtesy call of Mohamed Al Hammadi, chairman and chief executive officer of ENEC in Malacanang, welcomed the visit amid the country’s bid to increase the use of alternative energy sources in the country.
“I’m trying to figure out what are the needs of the government. And this had become a very high priority topic. I hope we can find ways to help each other in this,” Marcos said.
Hammad in June met First Lady Liza Araneta-Marcos in the United Arab Emirates where he extended the invitation for Marcos to join the International Declaration to Triple Nuclear Energy — 2024 Objectives at the United Nations General Assembly this September.
The International Declaration to Triple Nuclear Energy calls for the tripling of global nuclear energy capacity by 2050.
In May, representatives from the Board of Investments met with UAE companies to discuss possible investment opportunities in the Philippines, particularly those relating to clean energy.
Around 1,000 Filipinos are currently working in UAE’s Barakah Nuclear Energy Plant.
