The Philippines has clinched the 50th spot in the 2025 Global Innovation Index (GII), up three notches from the 2024 ranking.
In a statement on Wednesday, the Department of Science and Technology said the country’s upward ranking “underscores the growing role of science, technology, and innovation in shaping the country’s economic and social future, with DOST at the forefront of this transformation.”
The Philippines was 59th in the 2022 GII, and 56th in 2023.
The GII, produced annually by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) together with global knowledge partners, ranks over 139 economies based on their innovation inputs such as human capital, research and development (R&D) institutions, and outputs.
“Science, technology, and innovation must deliver solutions and create opportunities for every Filipino, our families and communities,” DOST Secretary Renato Solidum, Jr. was quoted as saying in the agency statement.
He added that the DOST has been working to ensure that research will turn into real products, services, and industries that can improve lives.
Over the past three years, the DOST has funded more than 3,000 R&D projects across 17 regions, empowering universities, colleges, and research consortia to address national priorities such as climate resilience, health technologies, digital transformation, and advanced manufacturing.
It also provided scholarships to more than 45,000 undergraduate and graduate students, while the Philippine Science High School System has nurtured over 6,000 young scholars annually.
Together with the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCCI), the DOST co-leads the DOST-PCCI Business Technology Hub, a platform where technologies are showcased, matched with industry needs, and accelerated toward commercialization.
The DOST, meanwhile, reaffirmed its mission to make science, technology, and innovation central to national progress and to position the country as a rising innovation hub. (PNA)
