The Philippines will explore collaboration with Canada in the aviation sector, particularly in strengthening the country’s maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) industry.
In an interview on March 28, Trade Secretary Cristina Roque said this would be on her agenda when she makes an official mission to Toronto, Canada, from April 25 to 27.
Roque cited the need to strengthen the country’s MRO industry in light of the aggressive re-fleeting programs of local and international carriers.
“I have talked to Cebu Pacific and Air Asia, and they said they are expanding their aircraft repair services. They will also now repair aircraft for other airlines,” Roque said.
She said the repair of some A380s is already being done locally.
Cebu Pacific also derives earnings from aircraft repair, aside from its income from airline operations, Roque said.
“They are beefing up and strengthening their repair services, “ she added.
Data from DTI show that the Philippines hosts the MRO facilities of Lufthansa Technik, Singapore Engineering Philippines, and Metrojet Engineering.
