The Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Western Visayas is calling for a long-term solution to the power outages in Boracay Island in Malay, Aklan, following two days of brownout from September 13 to the afternoon of Monday, September 15.
Lawyer Jobert Peñaflorida, PCCI Western Visayas governor and incoming national vice president, said the power outage was a huge disruption for business, especially for micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs).
“It has a huge impact, especially at this time when the situation in Boracay is very challenging, including our micro, small, and medium enterprises,” he said in an interview.
While the power was restored after several attempts, he said Boracay stakeholders and the government should look for a long-term solution because “it is not okay for Boracay to be marketed as a world-class destination, but it has no stable power.”
“At the end of the day, Boracay is a prime destination and is a huge economic driver for Region 6,” he added.
The Department of Tourism, in a statement, disclosed the “disruption not only impacts daily life but also threatens the reputation of Boracay as one of our premier tourist destinations.”
The Aklan Electric Cooperative announced that all feeders covering Caticlan and Boracay Substation were energized at 12:53 p.m. on Monday, September 15. (PNA)
