Philippine Airlines (PAL) renewed its partnership with OpenAirlines, the leading provider of fuel management solutions, to further increase fuel savings.
Under the partnership, PAL becomes the first Asian airline to adopt SkyBreathe OnBoard, a user-friendly digital solution that uses advanced algorithms based on the world’s largest fuel-efficiency database and real-time data to provide live assistance on fuel-saving initiatives in the cockpit.
This strategic implementation, along with other initiatives, is forecasted to yield 1 percent fuel savings per flight, resulting in a quick return on investment.
In a press briefing, Capt. Stanley Ng, PAL president and chief operating officer, said the fuel savings allow the company to offer competitive fares.
“With the savings we can actually offer we can be more competitive and we can offer cheaper (fare) for the customers,” Ng said.
The partnership between the two firms started in 2021 and it was renewed to further achieve significant fuel savings.
“Since we started working with OpenAirlines in 2022 with the implementation of SkyBreathe Analytics, we have achieved significant fuel savings. We have decided to bring this partnership further by adopting the latest innovation from the platform and engaging pilots in applying fuel-efficient initiatives at the right time during the flight. We are convinced that bringing SkyBreathe aboard will improve PAL’s operational performance,” Ng said
“During the flight, pilots are busy performing many tasks, and it’s hard to know which, when, and how to apply fuel best practices. SkyBreathe OnBoard results from years of dedicated R&D and collaboration with pilots to build an app that can push relevant and timely notifications on fuel-saving opportunities for good and quick decision-making without additional workload. We are honored that Philippine Airlines has become our first customer in Asia-Pacific to adopt SkyBreathe OnBoard,” said Alexandre Feray, OpenAirlines chief executive officer.
The solution is part of the SkyBreathe eco-flying platform, the leading fuel management software used by 66 airlines worldwide to reduce CO2 emissions and increase efficiency and savings. SkyBreathe OnBoard is designed to engage pilots and achieve additional fuel savings on the go.
The recommendations consider real-time flight. For example, the integrated Direct Assistant enables pilots to receive timely notifications for in-flight shortcut opportunities for better decision-making.
