CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY – The National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) has launched in this city the nationwide broadband mapping system developed by Northern Mindanao engineers and information technology professionals “to establish clear and transparent benchmarks on (data) service providers’ speed, reliability for the consumers.”

NTC Commissioner Ella Blanca Lopez said during the launch on Tuesday, August 26, that the Quality of Service (QoS) and Broadband Mapping System was designed as a toolkit for NTC offices to assist policymakers, investors, and local governments in providing prompt and data-driven information, and in assessing the IT services in their jurisdictions.

Consumers and customers of the QoS and Broadband Mapping System services will experience the ease-of-doing business that the system has been designed to create, she said.

“This is to establish clear and transparent benchmarks on (data) service providers’ speed, reliability for the consumers,” Lopez said.

The QoS will guarantee that service providers deliver the internet speeds they have advertised in their marketing, she added.

NTC Northern Mindanao Director Teodory Buenavista Jr. said the launch was a milestone as the national directorate adopted a system designed by developers mainly from the University of Science and Technology of Southern Philippines (USTP).

The system provides real-time data on connected communities, which the NTC is responsible for managing and monitoring, the NTC explained.

USTP president Dr. Ambrosio Cultura II said the QoS and Broadband Mapping System has been designed as a platform to bridge the digital divide between communities.

At the start, the development team pilot-tested the system in 2,800 barangays across 12 regions. After the launch, it now aims to expand the system to an additional 5,000 barangays nationwide, the NTC said.

Along with the QoS, the NTC Edge Extension Program, which facilitates easier document tracing and filing within government bureaucracies, was also launched. (PNA)
