Energy Development Corp. (EDC) will issue the notice to proceed on its 100 megawatts (MW) Aya Pump Hydro project in Nueva Ecija this year.
“…We are excited to issue a notice to proceed for our Aya Pump Hydro Project that will be a first of its kind in the north of the Philippines. Even if it is a hydro project given its ability to respond it will be the largest battery system the country will have which is important to allow more wind and solar into the grid,” said Richard Tantoco, EDC president and chief operating officer, during a listing ceremony last week.
Tantoco said unlike traditional lithium ion battery systems with a usual max discharge of three hours, their planned pump hydro project can easily discharge over 8 to 12 hours.
In 2019, the Department of Energy granted EDC with a hydropower service contract for the exclusive development of the project which aims to provide energy during peak periods and ancillary services to the electricity grid. – Jed Macapagal
