Metro Pacific Tollways Corp. subsidiary NLEX Corp. said it is investing nearly P1.4 billion in technology upgrades to ensure smooth toll transactions during the implementation of the mandatory cashless system starting next month.
NLEX Corp. said in a statement on Wednesday the upgrade involves the installation of automatic license plate recognition cameras on all 315 toll lanes and the conversion of the remaining 127 radio frequency identification (RFID) antennas to high-frequency antennas capable of reading RFID stickers more efficiently, the company said.
It said these antennas will increase the read range for RFID stickers and detect up to three vehicles in advance to promptly process toll lane transactions.
These upgrades aim to achieve a 98 percent RFID readability rate, ensure vehicle detection at toll lanes within one second for all classes, and provide accurate vehicle classification, the company added.
The company said it also invested in additional speed cameras to strengthen traffic law enforcement and complement the toll system enhancements, helping mitigate the dangers of speeding for the safety of motorists.
Other upgrades include the replacement of toll lane computers and installation of the plaza computer system and video enhancement system servers in NLEX and SCTEX.
Starting March 15, 2025, the Toll Regulatory Board has mandated all vehicles traveling along the toll expressways to have valid electronic toll collection device or RFID sticker installed.
