NGCP probes grid disturbance

The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) is investigating the cause of the grid disturbance on Sunday night that caused power interruptions in some parts of Luzon.

NGCP said it monitored a grid disturbance affecting the San Jose-Nagsaag 500 kilovolt transmission line 2 and multiple power plants in Luzon that resulted to automatic load dropping (ALD) and power interruptions at 6:45 p.m.

NGCP said it fully restored the issue in all areas affected by the ALD that caused power interruptions in Metro Manila, Cagayan, Kalinga, Apayao, Laguna, Quezon, Batangas and Camarines Norte by 7:33 p.m.

Meanwhile, the Manila Electric Co. (Meralco) said in its franchise area alone, as much as 850,000 customers or 11 percent of its 7.72 million entire customer base were affected.

Meralco said the 850,000 affected customers were scattered in parts of Metro Manila, Pampanga, Bulacan, Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal and Quezon.

The Department of Energy has yet to issue a statement related to the incident. – Jed Macapagal
