The Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System (MWSS) is optimistic a new concession agreement (CA) will be reached soon between the government and Maynilad Water Services Inc., saying this is crucial in boosting investments on water security.
Reynaldo Velasco, MWSS chairman and acting administrator, said he sees Maynilad’s CA to be “a win-win solution to the consumers, government and concessionaire.”
Velasco said a revised agreement will be a big boost to water security projects as Maynilad’s capital expenditure goes to the rehabilitation and replacement of old
pipelines, installation of new pipes in unserved areas, construction of new pumping stations, reservoirs and treatment facilities, among others.
Ramoncito Fernandez, Maynilad president and chief executive officer, said a conclusion of the a revised CA will allow the company to “proceed with the various projects needed to sustain service improvements for the long term.”
The company currently maintains and operates some 6,831 kilometers of primary, secondary and tertiary pipelines, alongside 35 pumping stations, 32 water reservoirs and 28 in-line boosters across its service area.
Likewise, its reservoirs have a total holding capacity of over 700 million liters of potable water with four water treatment plants and 19 sewage treatment plants, two joint sewage and septage treatment plants and one septage plant for a combined treatment capacity of around 664,000 cubic meters per day.
