Nickel Asia Corp., through its renewable energy arm Emerging Power Inc. (EPI), has signed a partnership agreement to supply clean electricity to licensed retail energy supplier (RES) Mabuhay Energy Corp. (MECO).
The parties said in a statement on Monday the collaboration allows EPI’s subsidiaries Jobin SQM Inc. (JSI) and Northern Palawan Power Generation Corp. to provide MECO with a portion of the power generated from the 72.128 megawatts (MW) Subic New PV power plant and the upcoming Phase 1 of the 70 MW Cawag solar power plant.
“We are honored to have been chosen by MECO as a partner in expanding their business of delivering clean and sustainable energy to their RES customers… Through our expanding solar portfolio, which includes the Subic and Cawag power plants, we steadfastly aim to contribute to the Philippines’ renewable energy goals which should help enhance the country’s energy security in the near term,” said Roy Joseph Fernandez, EPI president and chief executive officer.
However, the parties did not specify the volume of electricity involved in the deal.
EPI, through JSI, owns and operates two solar facilities in Subic, Zambales. It is also actively developing the Cawag solar power plant in the same area.
MECO, a wholly owned subsidiary of the Aviva Group of Companies, has been providing customizable energy solutions since 2017.
In the Philippines, companies which can buy electricity from RES instead of from local distribution utilities are called “contestable customers” or those with a monthly peak demand of at least 500 kilowatts over the preceding 12 months.
Those which purchase electricity via retail supply usually have lower monthly bills as they can negotiate their power rates among the numerous companies that offer such services.
Apart from solar projects, EPI also explores pilot geothermal projects in Mindoro and Biliran. Once completed, the pilot operations may be expanded to realize potentially 20 MW in Mindoro and 50 MW in Biliran.
