The much-awaited Metro Rail Transit line 7 (MRT-7) project is ready to start partial operation by next year following the delivery of its brand new train sets.

President Duterte and Transportation Secretary Arthur Tugade yesterday led the unveiling ceremony for the first batch of trains for MRT-7 which consists of six train sets or 18 rail cars that arrived in the country last September.

These new train cars are part of the 108 rail cars or 36 train sets manufactured in South Korea.

Construction works of MRT-7 currently stand at an overall progress rate of 62.10 percent.

“The project is eyed for partial operations with test runs starting in April 2022 and passenger operations in December 2022,” the Department of Transportation said.

The project aims to decongest Metro Manila and strengthen connectivity and mobility among cities in the Metro and nearby provinces.

Once completed, the 22-kilometer railway will link North Avenue, Quezon City and San Jose del Monte, Bulacan, reducing travel time from the present 2 to 3 hours to just 35 minutes.

The project is expected to serve 38,000 passengers during peak hours daily and to accommodate around 300,000 passengers daily in its first year of operations.

The MRT-7 project forms part of the Duterte administration’s flagship Build, Build, Build infrastructure development program which aims to ease traffic congestion and spur growth in the country’s economy.

San Miguel Corp. is the concession-holder for the project and is fully funding construction of the mass transit system that links up with the MRT-3 and Light Rail Transit-1.
