METRO Pacific Water, the water-related business of Metro Pacific Investments Corp. outside Metro Manila, is looking to expand in the wastewater management business, eyeing Iloilo and Dumaguete.

Christopher Andrew Pangilinan, president at Metro Pacific Water Solutions Inc. (MPWS), a unit of Metro Pacific Water, last week said the initiative is seen to increase the company’s coverage from less than 10 percent of the market it currently serves.
“That’s one of the areas that we’re looking at because, right now, they don’t have a municipal (sewage treatment plant) system so they’re working closely with us to put in one (STP) there,” said Pangilinan in an interview on the sidelines of the MPWS rebranding from its old corporate name as Ecosystem Technologies Inc. – a company MPIC invested into in 2016.
Pangilinan said with an STP, wastewater will first be treated before going to the body of water in an area.
Pangilinan said while growing the company’s market, MPWS is also looking at new technologies that will increase its efficiency.
“We’re looking at new technologies because of the rapid evolution of both water and wastewater treatments. We’ve been going around talking to several technology partners as we try to expand the capacity of the company,” he said.
“We’ve been (using) membrane bioreactor (MBR) for the longest time but it’s an old technology so we’re looking at several new ones, specially for our market here, locally,” he added.
“One concern, always, with sewage treatment plants is the space that is needed. We’re looking at new technologies that can be more compact, more suitable for our market here,” he also said.
MPWS has been in the business for the past 30 years and is engaged in small and large scale, and municipal wastewater systems. It has designed and built around 700 plants for its customers and has been operating more than 100 STPs nationwide.
Its clients range from zoos to commercial establishments such as malls.
It also services its sister company, Maynilad Water Services Inc. “They have two sewage treatment plants that we are now upgrading to their system and producing recycled water,” said Pangilinan.
Mostly engaged in business-to-business, the company has several contracts with SM Malls, Walter Mart and PLDT.
