THE National Power Corp. (NPC) and the Maharlika Consortium have recently signed the official agreement for the development of microgrid systems for eight unserved areas in Cebu, Quezon and Palawan.

The microgrid systems service provider (MGSP) service contract was signed by NPC with the Maharlika Consortium composed of the Maharlika Clean Power Holdings Corp., CleanGrid Partners Pte. Ltd. and WeEnergy Global Pte. Ltd.

Under the deal, the consortium will provide electricity services to the three areas through a hybrid microsystem with solar, energy storage system and diesel generating sets.

The consortium must provide 24/7 electrification to the areas and must incorporate at least 35 percent renewable energy and offer the least cost solution.

The agreement is part of the Department of Energy’s (DOE) recently conducted the first round of its competitive selection process (CSP) for the MGSP program.

NPC said the rates in the covered areas will be determined by the Energy Regulatory Commission and will be sourced from the Universal Charge for Missionary Electrification.

Last April, the Department of Energy (DOE) said it is keen on pursuing the second round of its MGSP-CSP within the year.

DOE said for the second round of bidding, new areas as well as those areas with no proposals received during the first round will be involved.

The MGSP-CSP aims for the electrification of 98 declared unserved and underserved areas of the country that were clustered into 49 lots.
