A P700-million battery energy storage system (BESS) will soon rise in Toledo, Cebu, thanks to an engineering, procurement, and construction contract recently signed between Meralco PowerGen Corp. (MGEN) unit Toledo Energy Development Corp. and Contemporary Amperex Technology Co., Limited (CATL) and SUMEC Complete Equipment and Engineering Co., Ltd. (SUMEC).
Construction and installation will begin this September , with the project’s first phase expected to deliver 25 megawatts by the second quarter of 2026. Full completion is targeted for 2027, subject to regulatory clearances.

“By integrating advanced storage technology, we are not only enhancing grid stability but also ensuring that renewable energy can be supplied reliably, day and night,” added SUMEC Philippines General Manager Lennon Zong. ”This step is crucial for reducing carbon emissions and building a resilient energy future for this nation.”
MGEN said the project will support grid stability in the Visayas and strengthen the country’s renewable energy transition.
