The Manila Electric Co. (Meralco) has put up a new switching station that will cater to the power requirements of VITRO Inc.’s artificial intelligence (AI) ready hyperscale data center in Sta. Rosa, Laguna which is currently the largest of its kind in the country.
Meralco said in a statement on Tuesday the 115 kilovolt switching station will help ensure adequacy, redundancy and reliability that are critical to the operations of the data center with a 50 megawatts ultimate power demand.
VITRO Inc. is a subsidiary of ePLDT, the data center arm of the PLDT group which in turn is an affiliate of Meralco.
The parties did not provide other key information on the said investment.
“VITRO Sta. Rosa is not just another data center, it’s a facility designed to welcome hyperscalers and accelerate the country’s adoption of AI… The digital infrastructure we are building directly supports the country’s modernization and progress, impacting industries like telco, finance, healthcare, manufacturing and government services to name a few. Our strong partnership with Meralco is strategic as we continue to build world-class facilities,” said Victor Genuino, ePLDT and VITRO Inc. president and chief executive officer.
Ronnie Aperocho, Meralco executive vice president and chief operating officer, said that the Laguna switching station design incorporates redundancy features which guarantees the data center can maintain uninterrupted services.
Meralco said such investments are also in support of the government’s goal to strategically position hyperscale industry developments in the country.
