The Manila Electric Co. (Meralco) said its cooperation agreement with American firm Ultrasafe Nuclear Corp. is set to be formalized during the state visit of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. to the United States next week.
The company said as part of the agreement, the nuclear firm will demonstrate its technology to officials of Meralco and the Philippine government.
“We will have this opportunity to see the working system in one of the campuses of the University of Illinois in the US,” said Ronnie Aperocho, Meralco chief operating officer, at the company’s quarterly results briefing on Monday.
Last September, Meralco chairman Manuel Pangilinan, said the cost of developing modular nuclear reactors in the Philippines will be among items that will be discussed in the feasibility studies with Ultra Safe.
Meralco said Ultra Safe currently has modular nuclear reactor technologies with capacities between 5 and 15 megawatts which are apt for island provinces setting especially in powering hyperscale data centers and water desalination plants.– Jed Macapagal
