MANILA Electric Co. (Meralco) said its power generation subsidiary Meralco PowerGen Corp. (MGen) eyes to build 3,000 megawatts (MW) worth of capacity in five years of which 1,000 MW allotted for renewable energy (RE), according to the electricity distribution company’s president Ray Espinosa.
Rogelio Singson, MGen president and chief executive officer, said 2,000 MW from the 3,000 MW capacity will be from coal-fired projects already in development.
These are from the 2×600 MW Atimonan One Energy in Quezon Province; the 2×350 San Raphael project in Batangas and the remaining from the minority investment option in the Mariveles coal project.
MGen’s RE projects for the year have been pushed back following the pandemic.
But the company assured the projects will be pursued to achieve its initial goal of hitting a RE portfolio of as much as 1,200 MW that will also include wind power projects.
