THE Manila Electric Co. (Meralco) has energized a smart substation in Parañaque City to support key economic hubs in the southern part of Metro Manila.
Meralco said in a statement on Tuesday the new 115 kilovolt (kV)-34.5 kV Gas Insulated Switchgear (GIS) Substation augments its capability to reliably serve ASEANA City in Parañaque City and nearby developments.
The company said the project also enhances its operational efficiency with a projected system loss reduction of 373,392 kilowatt-hours that translates into customer savings.
System loss happens when energy facilities produce slightly less output compared to how much fuel is used. It is usually affected by various factors including pilferage, human error and quality of equipment.
Power distributors and electric cooperatives currently collect a charge from consumers to compensate for systems loss.
The company did not detail the investment amount involved in the new facility, which is also equipped with an 83-megavolt-ampere (MVA) power transformer, indoor 115-kV and 34.5 kV GIS switchgears, a 14.4 MVA capacitor bank, and a 1.2-ohm neutral reactor.
Meralco said a GIS building and corresponding protection and control devices were also constructed.
It added that the ASEANA GIS Substation alleviates the heavy loading of existing PAGCOR-1 transformer banks and provides enhanced switching flexibility during contingencies.
The smart substation equipped with advanced network automation technology specifically serves the power requirements of business and commercial establishments including ASEANA 3, Ayala Malls Manila Bay, Bayprime Hotel, Capeton Baysuites, Hop Inn Hotel Aseana City Manila, K1 Center by Prestige Bay and Uni-Asia International Prime Holdings Inc., Manila Bay Development Corp., Platinum Tower, Sequoia Hotel Manila Bay, Seda Manila Bay, and Sinocan Corporate Center.
“With the energization of ASEANA Substation, we continue to deliver on our commitment to invest heavily on infrastructure and projects that ensure power availability, especially in expanding economic hubs,” Meralco First Vice President and Head of Networks Froilan Savet said, adding that the project plays a key role in improving system reliability and serving customers’ requirements.
