JURONG ISLAND, SINGAPORE. – Manila Electric Co. (Meralco) is optimistic about winning a contract to put up a 600-megawatt (MW) natural gas-fired power plant here.

Yari Miralao, MGEN Gas Energy Holdings Inc. (MNatural Gas) president and chief executive officer, told reporters in a briefing here the company has submitted a bid to build the project.

MNatural Gas is a subsidiary of Meralco Power Gen Corp. (MGen) which, in turn, serves as the power generation arm of Meralco.

The Singapore government is expected to choose the winner before the end of the year or early next year, the company said.

Miralao said the bid to construct a 600 MW natural gas power plant that will utilize a combined cycle gas turbine technology was submitted through Pacific Light Power Pte. Ltd. (PLP).

PLP is a joint venture between MGen, with 58 percent stake, and Hong Kong-based investment management and holding company First Pacific, which holds the remaining 42 percent.

“As part of MGen’s comprehensive energy strategy, we are dedicated to investing in state-of-the-art facilities to enhance our competitiveness in the Singapore energy market. This includes a potential investment in a new 600 MW power plant, designed to be larger, more efficient, and will be one of the most reliable on the Singapore grid,” Miralao said.

“This initiative underscores our commitment to driving clean energy solutions, not only in the Philippines but also in other markets where we operate. At MGen, our vision is to lead the energy transition toward a cleaner, more sustainable future, and we are confident in our ability to achieve these ambitious goals,” Miralao added.

The Singapore Energy Market Authority (EMA) opened offers for two 600 MW units of natural gas-fired power plants.

Last May, PLP secured from the Singapore EMA the right to build, own and operate two power generating units that will provide 100 MW of fast start generation capacity by the second quarter of next year.

The company was awarded with a 25-year fast start contract for a 100 MW hydrogen ready, gas turbine that can be brought from standstill to full load within 18 minutes, providing capacity for ancillary reserve services.

PLP has an existing 800 MW natural gas power plant here.
